Child and Youth Programs
A number of programs focus on the healthy development of children and youth, and they are coordinated with school divisions, principals, and teachers within the municipality.
Some programs may be available outside of regular school hours.

Babysitters Course: Offered throughout the year, this course prepares participants to provide safe and fun babysitting services to family and friends.
Body Talk: This program is for grade 4, 5, and 6 students. Students learn how to communicate effectively within boundaries and sustain healthy relationships. It addresses anatomy, puberty, hygiene, and menstruation.
The Empathy Program: For children 3-5 years of age. Offered as parented sessions and in early learning environments(non-parented), this program provides stories, songs, and activities that enhance empathetic development.
Friendship Groups: The curriculum is adjusted to be relevant to the students’ ages. These programs focus on building students’ personal strengths and developing essential social skills. These groups cover various topics, such as self-esteem, teamwork, getting along with others, etc.
Gay Straight Alliance—Safe Space: This peer-led group is for youth in grades 6-12. It brings LGBTQ2S+ and allied youth together to build community and organize around issues impacting them in their schools and communities.
Hands Are Not for Hitting: For Kindergarten & grade 1 students. Students will learn how to properly use their bodies when they are experiencing difficult emotions.
Home Alone: This program is for youth 8 – 10 years of age. It focuses on safety in the home and preparing your child to be left alone for short periods of time. This program also offers students information on navigating the online world and skills on how to be good cyber citizens.
I Can Handle Anger: This is an age-appropriate anger management program for grade 1 and 2 students. Students learn different ways to handle anger and other difficult emotions.
Kids Have Stress Too: For grade 1 to 12 students. The curriculum is adjusted to be relevant to the students’ ages. This program promotes resiliency by buffering the impacts of stress. We teach students how to respond to stress in healthy and constructive ways. *Available in Valleyview
Kids Conference: For children and youths aged 5-12. A dynamic 2 1/2 day conference offers participants session choices from three streams of learning: life skills, creativity, and physical well-being. *Available in Grande Cache
Life Skills: For children and youth ages 5 – 12. Beyond the academic world, children require skills that are used in daily life as adults. Areas of learning include financial literacy, cooking, public speaking, fostering creativity, and navigating social dynamics.
MindUP: A program that uses mindfulness to teach emotional self-regulation in students. This program also implements the use of a Sparks Fly stationary bicycle.
Miyo Wichihitowin (Good Relations): This program is for children and youth ages 5-18. Students learn about local Indigenous culture and traditional practices and have opportunities to connect with elders and local Indigenous role models. Activities are open to Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth to bridge the gap between cultures.
Relationship and Sexual Health Education (RSE): This comprehensive program for grade 7 to 12 students helps youth develop and practice the skills needed to make healthy decisions about their sexuality and relationships.
Why Try?: This program is for grades 4-12 students (the curriculum is adjusted to be relevant to the students’ ages). It assists children who are frustrated, confused, or angry with life’s pressures and challenges. The program stresses to youth that although making good decisions can be difficult, doing so results in more opportunity, freedom, and self-respect.
WiseGuyz: For grade 9 male-identified youth, this program promotes mental health and healthy relationships and prevents adolescent dating violence. The program provides a space for participants to discuss and explore the impacts of harmful gender stereotypes and builds essential relationship skills.
