High-speed internet has become a necessity for school, business, service delivery, public information, and social interaction. In fact, the Government of Canada declared high-speed internet as an essential service back in 21016, outlining minimum targets of 50 megabits per second (Mbps) download speed and 10 Mbps upload speed for all Canadians.
And yet, many Albertas living outside of major urban centres have speeds nowhere near those standards.
Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) has teamed up with the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) to collect real-world internet speed data from rural Alberta. They will use that data to tell the government and other decision-makers what internet service is actually like for rural Albertans.
