Update: Province of Alberta’s Upper Smoky Sub-Regional Plan

We know the new Upper Smoky Sub-Regional Plan has sparked a lot of discussion in Greenview. While industry and residents have raised concerns, Greenview Council, in collaboration with our regional partners, has worked hard to advocate for our community’s interests throughout the planning process.

Here’s what the new plan means for Greenview:

  • Balanced Approach: The plan aims to protect our environment and support local jobs, thanks to strong advocacy from Greenview and our regional partners.
  • Community Input Matters: Greenview advocated meaningful consultation, and numerous local voices contributed to shaping the final plan. We’re committed to ongoing dialogue and future amendments as new feedback and data come in.
  • Access & Recreation: Residents will continue to enjoy Crown lands for recreation and traditional uses, with new opportunities for community involvement in trail stewardship.
  • Safety First: Wildfire protection and emergency access are prioritized, helping keep our community safe.
  • Transparency & Flexibility: The plan includes regular updates, an implementation committee, and monitoring of both individual and cumulative effects, ensuring everyone stays informed.

We recognize that change can be challenging, and we’re here to listen. Greenview will continue working with residents, stakeholders, regional partners, and the Province to ensure the plan reflects our community’s needs and priorities.
