Hospital

In front of you stands the Grande Cache Community Health Complex. When Grande Cache was officially established as a town in 1966, there was no hospital, and basic medical services were initially provided through the Edson Health Unit. Eventually, medical care was delivered from Dr. Stephenson’s residence until the town later provided a trailer in Shand Trailer Court for clinical use. On June 17, 1969, the Grande Cache General Hospital District #63 was officially established. Construction of a 34-bed hospital began in October 1969, largely thanks to a $250,000 contribution from McIntyre Mines, which allowed work to start immediately. However, on March 28, 1970, the hospital building was destroyed by fire during construction, and work had to begin again from scratch. The hospital officially opened on November 27, 1970. The nearby Medical Centre was completed the following year, in 1971. The most recent addition to the health complex is the helipad, completed in 2015. This enhancement significantly improves emergency response capabilities, facilitating faster transport for critical patients from the community and surrounding areas.
