Grande Cache Public Service Building

Grande Cache was officially established in 1969 as a new town to support coal mining. Over time, the community faced declining population, aging infrastructure, and financial challenges, leading residents to vote in 2018 to dissolve the town. As of January 1, 2019, Grande Cache became a hamlet within the Municipal District of Greenview No. 16. Today, the Grande Cache Public Service Building on Shand Avenue serves as the local administrative office and fire station, providing essential municipal services to the community under Greenview’s governance.

The Municipal District of Greenview, established in 1994, encompasses a vast area of over 32,000 square kilometers, making it the third largest rural municipality in Alberta. There are 6 hamlets, including Little Smoky, Ridgevalley, DeBolt, Landry Heights, Grande Cache, and Grovedale, and they border the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, the towns of Fox Creek and Valleyview, and Grande Prairie to the west.
