Peaks, canyons and small-town charm
Start at Sulphur Gates
Begin where the Sulphur and Smoky Rivers collide in a dramatic two-toned canyon. Short, well-marked trails lead to viewing platforms above the 100-metre cliffs — one of the most photographed spots in the region, and best in the morning light.
Bag a peak after lunch
Grande Cache’s famous Passport to the Peaks challenge invites you to summit any of 21 surrounding mountains. For a first visit, Grande Mountain rewards a moderate climb with panoramic views over the townsite and Willmore Wilderness Park. Pick up your official passport booklet at the Visitor Information Centre before you head out.
Dinner and a valley sunset
Refuel at a local restaurant downtown, then catch the sunset from the highway viewpoint east of town — on a clear evening the whole front range glows.
Lakes, local stories and the scenic drive home
Morning on Grande Cache Lake
Five minutes from town, the lake’s calm water and mountain backdrop make it perfect for a paddle, a swim off the beach, or simply coffee at a lakeside picnic table. Canoe and kayak rentals are available seasonally.
Dig into the local story
At the Grande Cache Tourism & Interpretive Centre, explore the area’s Indigenous heritage, fur-trade and coal-mining history, and the legendary Canadian Death Race — then browse locally made goods in the gift shop.
Take the long way home
Wrap up with one of Alberta’s most underrated drives along Highway 40. Watch for bighorn sheep on the slopes and stop at the marked pullouts for one last look at the peaks.

Getting Here
Grande Cache sits on Highway 40, roughly 2 hours south of Grande Prairie and 4.5 hours west of Edmonton. Fuel up before you leave the main highways.
Cell Service
Coverage is reliable in town but limited on trails and in Willmore Wilderness Park. Download offline maps before you set out.
Wildlife Smart
This is bear country. Carry bear spray on all trails, keep it accessible, and know how to use it.
