FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Council Highlights – October 13, 2026

Valleyview, Alberta

Continued Support for Regional Legion Poppy Campaign

Regional Royal Canadian Legion branches will receive continued support for their Poppy Funds, with Council approving $1,000 annually for each branch in Valleyview, Grande Prairie, Fox Creek, Grande Cache and West Smoky for 2026–2028. The contribution totals $5,000 per year, funded through the Annual Donations and Sponsorships budget.

The funding renews Greenview’s previous three-year commitment and supports the Legion’s work assisting Veterans and their families and honouring the service and sacrifice of those who have served Canada.

Charity Clay Shoot Provides $65,509 for Regional Food Banks Serving Greenview Residents

Food banks serving Greenview residents will receive a combined $65,509.20 from the 2026 Greenview Charity Clay Shoot and Council’s allocation of $4,319.20 in unspent event budget funds. The total will be divided equally among food banks in Fox Creek, Valleyview, DeBolt, Grande Prairie and Grande Cache, providing $13,101.84 to each. This contribution continues Council’s support for these organizations as they face increased demand for their services.

Council also scheduled the 10th Annual Greenview Charity Clay Shoot for September 2, 2027, at the Wapiti Shooters Club in the County of Grande Prairie. Proceeds will again be shared equally among the same five food banks.

Capital Grant Supports Nitehawk Infrastructure

Nitehawk Year-Round Adventure Park received a $232,000 Community Impact Capital Grant, approved by Council from the 2026 Community Impact Grants budget. The grant covers half of Nitehawk’s identified capital funding needs for 2026, supporting critical infrastructure maintenance, operational reliability and improvements to guest safety and experience.

The funding supports outdoor recreation opportunities for Greenview residents and surrounding communities.

Sponsorship Supports PARDS Therapeutic Riding Programs

The Peace Area Riding for the Disabled Society (PARDS) received a $1,000 sponsorship and an in-kind donation of up to $500 for its annual Dine & Dance fundraiser, taking place November 7, 2026, at Five Mile Hall in Clairmont. Council allocated the support from the 2026 Community Services Sponsorships and In-Kind Goods and Services budgets.

The fundraiser supports PARDS’ therapeutic riding and inclusive recreation programs for children and adults across the Peace Region, including Greenview residents. The in-kind donation will contribute to the event’s silent auction or raffle prizes.

Greenview Supports Nitehawk’s Potential Role in 2028 Alberta 55+ Winter Games

Nitehawk Year-Round Adventure Park received Council’s endorsement as the ski sport venue for the 2028 Alberta 55+ Winter Games through a letter of support to the City of Grande Prairie. Planned for March 2028, the Games would bring participants from across Alberta to events in Grande Prairie and surrounding communities, including Greenview.

The letter also supports presenting the Games as a regional event, recognizing the involvement of neighbouring communities and facilities. Hosting ski competitions at Nitehawk would give athletes aged 55 and older from across Alberta an opportunity to compete in Greenview and experience the area’s recreation offerings.

FireSmart Project Application Targets Vegetation Management Near Muskeg See Pee

A proposed FireSmart project would treat 17.8 hectares along the southwest side of the Muskeg See Pee community development to help reduce wildfire risk. Council supported the resubmission of Greenview’s application to the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA), providing the resolution required for the final approval step in the grant process.

The proposed work includes thinning, pruning, mulching and removing dead trees and fallen woody debris. Administration will submit the application to FRIAA.
