FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Council Highlights – February 24, 2026

Valleyview, Alberta

Greenview Supports Local Cattle Producers on Proposed Federal Traceability Changes

Council has directed Administration to prepare a letter to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency regarding proposed amendments to the Livestock Traceability Regulations. The correspondence will request broader consultation with producers, recognition of limited internet connectivity in rural regions, and consideration of the added costs to livestock operations.

The decision follows concerns raised by Greenview’s Agricultural Service Board about the potential impact of shortened reporting timelines and expanded requirements on small and mixed farming operations. Council’s letter will support local cattle producers and reinforce the need for practical, informed policy development at the federal level.

Recruitment of Young Women Through Camp FIRE Sponsorship Supported

Council has approved a $5,000 sponsorship to the City of Grande Prairie Fire Department in support of Camp FIRE, taking place April 24 to 26, 2026, in Grande Prairie. Funding will be provided through the 2026 Community Services Sponsorships budget.

Camp FIRE, Fostering Independence, Resilience and Empowerment, offers 15 young women aged 16 to 20 the opportunity to explore careers in emergency and fire services through practical training and mentorship. Greenview’s contribution as a Crew Sponsor will assist four participants and reflects Council’s commitment to regional collaboration and encouraging young women to pursue careers in emergency services.

Council Supports 2026 Entrepreneurial Initiatives Through Community Futures Sponsorships

Sponsorship funding to Community Futures Grande Prairie & Region in support of several 2026 initiatives has been approved by Council. Funding includes $2,000 for the Hyperdrive: Women in Business event taking place March 13 to 15 at the Delta Hotel in Grande Prairie, $1,000 for the organization’s entrepreneur-focused Podcast, $1,000 for the online Mastermind Group program, and $500 for Lemonade Day on June 13 in Grovedale.

These contributions, funded through the 2026 Community Services Sponsorships budget, support regional business development, peer networking, and youth entrepreneurship opportunities that are accessible to Greenview residents.

Greenview to Provide Letter of Support for Cold Climate Cooling Research

A letter of support will be provided for a proposed ASHRAE pilot project at Northwestern Polytechnic focused on low ambient chiller operation in extreme cold climates. The initiative would establish an instrumented lab environment to test and validate cooling systems capable of operating at temperatures as low as -50°F, while advancing energy efficiency and reliability for data centres in Climate Zone 7A.

The work is expected to help reduce technical risk for cold climate data centre projects and support continued data centre development in the region. It will also create specialized, hands-on training opportunities to prepare students and technicians for the increased demand driven by emerging data infrastructure. There are no financial or staffing implications to Greenview, and Administration will forward the letter in support of the grant application.

Greenview Reviews Library Board Relationships

Council received a report outlining its relationship with municipal and intermunicipal library boards, including an overview of governance structures and financial processes. The information will support Council in considering future discussions related to intermunicipal library arrangements.

Administration has also been directed to prepare a report examining the costs associated with establishing a Greenview librarian position to support coordinated access to information resources across public, academic, and government sectors. This review will inform Council’s consideration of potential next steps.

2026 Greenview Charity Clay Shoot Set in Support of Local Food Banks

The 9th Annual Greenview Charity Clay Shoot is set for September 3, 2026, at the Wapiti Shooters Club in the County of Grande Prairie. The event continues a tradition established in 2018 and allows Administration to proceed with planning and sponsorship outreach.

To support participation and strengthen the fundraiser’s impact, registration fees will be subsidized by 50% for each participant. Proceeds from the 2026 event will again be divided equally among the five food banks serving Greenview residents in Fox Creek, Valleyview, DeBolt, Grande Prairie, and Grande Cache, reinforcing Council’s ongoing commitment to local families and food security initiatives across Greenview.
