Rapid response to support firefighter safety
Helping to ensure the safety of Grande Cache’s volunteer firefighters, Greenview Council approved funding for the purchase of new equipment at their regular meeting, Feb. 10. Councillors voted to award the tender for the purchase of self-contained breathing apparatus to Rocky Mountain Phoenix of Red Deer at a total cost of $328,330.  SCBAs provide a secure air supply for firefighters and first responders working in areas where extreme heat and smoke may limit available oxygen or where there is a risk of toxic gas or other substances. The purchase means the SCBAs used by Grande Cache firefighters are comparable with those used in MD fire stations in Debolt and Grovedale as well as those utilized by Greenview’s mutual aid agreement partners.

Funding reserves established for Valleyview clinic operations
Greenview Council has given the green light to establish two funding reserves to help address building and equipment costs at the Valleyview and District Medical Clinic. With a full complement of physicians now renting space in the facility, the clinic realized budget surpluses in both the 2018 and 2019 fiscal years, the proceeds of which will be used to establish the two reserve funds. Any future surplus will also be directed to the new reserves to help off-set building maintenance costs and equipment purchase not covered by physicians but required for the continued operation of the clinic such as blood pressure monitors and exam room furnishings.

Fundraising tourney scores for community with Greenview support
Greenview Council has voted to provide $2,500 in funding to help support the 2020 Grande Cache Memorial Icebreaker Hockey Tournament, a major fundraising event for the hamlet and surrounding communities. Since 1998, the event has raised almost $333,000, with proceeds contributed to community groups and programs in the Grande Cache area. The tournament has evolved into an annual homecoming celebration for current and former Grande Cache residents.

Curlers set to rock the house in Valleyview
The MD of Greenview is lending its support to the annual Valleyview Ladies Bonspiel, Feb. 28 to March 1, with $500 in funding support. As many as 40 teams are expected to participate in the event, generating some late-winter economic activity for local businesses while showcasing some first-class curling action at the Red Willow Curling Club.

Greenview sponsorship helping to Make-A-Wish come true
Greenview Council has stepped up to help make the dreams of critically ill children in the Peace Country come true, approving $500 in sponsorship funding in support of the 2020 Valleyview Cup Charity Hockey Tournament, March 13 to 15 in Valleyview. Organizers are once again partnering with the Peace Country chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and since 2012, proceeds from the tournament have enabled the foundation to help realize the wishes of 17 Peace Country children dealing with life-threatening illnesses. From its early days as a six-team event, the Valleyview Cup has grown into a 20-team tournament and a demonstration of caring community spirit.

Supporting the next generation of Greenview entrepreneurs
Greenview’s budding entrepreneurs are learning how to turn lemons into lemonade – and how to do it at a profit – with a little help from Greenview Council. Councillors voted to approve $500 in funding in support of the Community Futures West Yellowhead 2020 Northern Alberta Lemonade Day, June 20. Lemonade Day is an opportunity for youth in Grande Cache, Hinton, Edson, Jasper and Wildwood to learn the fundamentals of starting and operating a business by opening their own lemonade stand. Youth registering for the program can participate in mentoring sessions where they learn the basics of business including budgeting, finding an investor and saving. The importance of giving back to the community is also stressed as participants are encouraged to donate a portion of their profits to a cause they believe in.
